What you'll learn

  • Build your own trade list inside a NinjaTrader strategy
  • Switch strategy trading between virtual and live modes
  • Control whether your strategy trades using its own equity
  • Fill virtual trades yourself without placing real orders
  • Track equity without NinjaTrader's SystemPerformance class
  • Plot an indicator from a strategy on a dedicated panel
  • Reuse the virtual trade engine in your own strategies

Equity Trader Strategy Explained Description

Equity Trader Strategy Explained is a course on coding a shadow trade strategy for NinjaTrader 8: a strategy that keeps its own trade list and decides whether to trade based on its own equity performance. To get there, it needs a virtual mode where it keeps trading without placing real trades, and that's what I build here. I wrote my own virtual trade performance engine for it, so there's no need to rely on NinjaTrader's SystemPerformance class. It's a short course with two code reviews, so it goes straight into the code. What's inside. Two lectures, about an hour. Main code review goes through the strategy. In virtual mode it trades but places no real trades in NinjaTrader: we fill those trades ourselves and keep them in our own trade list. That list feeds the virtual performance engine, and the equity it tracks is what tells the strategy whether to trade or not. The same strategy can run in virtual and in live mode. Indicator code review then covers the indicator the strategy plots on its own dedicated panel. What you'll be able to do. You'll be able to build your own trade list, put a strategy's trading into virtual and live modes, and control whether it trades using its own equity. You'll know how to fill virtual trades yourself and track their performance without SystemPerformance. You'll also know how to plot an indicator from a strategy on a dedicated panel. And you'll understand the virtual trades engine well enough to reuse it later for all sorts of things. Who it's for. Both lectures are code reviews, so this suits traders who already code NinjaScript strategies and want more control over when a strategy trades. If you've tried to build equity-based rules on top of SystemPerformance and found it frustrating, this shows another way. Why it still matters with AI. AI like Claude can write a strategy quickly, but a strategy that fills its own virtual trades has to get those fills and that equity right, or every decision built on them is off. To check, fix and change what AI writes, you need to understand how a trade list, virtual fills and equity tracking fit together inside a NinjaTrader strategy. That's exactly what this course shows. Everything in the course is coded on screen, step by step. My advice is the same as always: type it yourself as you watch rather than copy it, then use AI like Claude to explain, check or extend what you built. That's how it sticks. Enjoy the course!
