Building Hybrid Trend/Flat Strategies Description
Building Hybrid Trend/Flat Strategies is a course on coding trend/flat filters and hybrid strategies for NinjaTrader 8: trade the trend and wait out the flat. Many trend traders know the pain of choppy markets, when sideways movement eats into the account. I haven't found a magic pill, and this course doesn't pretend to be one. It shows possible ways to handle choppiness in code, and two complete systems that do it differently. Some time had passed since my previous course, so it also brings updates to my common code base and, as a bonus, a few trail stop concepts.
What's inside. 17 lectures, about 3 hours. After the course overview, the first section builds the indicators for a trend/flat filter. It starts with the main concept of the Volatility Switch and its oscillator code, which I compare with ADX for trend/flat filtering. Then comes the ADX theory and the full build: calculating the true range, ATR in two parts, DM+ and DM-, the directional index DI+ and DI-, sorting out the bugs, and a code review of the final ADX suite. Two trade systems follow. Trade System 1, Trend Control, uses the filter to avoid entries and exits, shown with a logic showcase, a code review and a validation showcase. Trade System 2, Hybrid Trader, enters and exits based on the current market condition using two groups of signals, with an overview, a validation example and a code review.
What you'll be able to do. Filter market choppiness out of a trend strategy, find more reliable trend start signals, and build a system that changes how it trades with the market condition, combining trading directions with breakout and bounce modes. You'll be able to code ATR, DM, DI and ADX yourself, and use unmanaged order handling in NinjaTrader. You'll build strategy templates and indicators you can reuse in your own projects.
Who it's for. Trend traders who keep getting caught in sideways markets, and strategy coders looking for new ideas in system design. Most lessons build or review code, so some NinjaScript experience helps.
Why it still matters with AI. AI like Claude can code an ADX filter in seconds. Deciding what counts as flat, how a strategy should behave there, and whether the filter really helps once you validate it is still up to you. This course shows how I build and judge those filters, starting from the true range. Everything in the course is coded on screen, step by step. My advice is the same as always: type it yourself as you watch rather than copy it, then use AI like Claude to explain, check or extend what you built. That's how it sticks. Enjoy the course!
