Indicator Design Essentials Description
Indicator Design Essentials is an indicator development course for NinjaTrader 8. It brings together what I've learned building indicators for NinjaTrader 8: the template I start from, how I handle settings and parameters, and lots of small tricks that took me hours to figure out (and a few sleepless nights). I wish I'd had them when I started. It won't cover every corner of NinjaScript, but it covers most of what you'll run into while making indicators.
What's inside. Three hours, 16 lectures. The first part, Indicator Design, sets up a main template you can reuse for most of your future indicators, then works through defaults, parameters and plots, accessing indicator values from a strategy, and multi-timeframe indicators. It ends with the first of three showcases, a daily range indicator: a cumulative daily range, showing and hiding parameters, and plotting the daily average range. The second part is a code walkthrough of a DI+ and DI- indicator. The third builds an EMA angle indicator: the idea, a showcase, rendering the line, the calculations, and a version scaled in degrees. The Resources section has the files.
What you'll be able to do. You'll start every new indicator from a clean template and set up its defaults, parameters and plots properly. You'll be able to build multi-timeframe indicators, correctly initialize an indicator from strategy code and read its values, and use NinjaTrader's TypeConverters to make your indicators nicer to use. And you'll end up with three working indicators, an EMA angle, DI+ and DI-, and a daily range indicator, with their code to study and change.
Who it's for. The course starts from the structure every indicator shares, so it works if you're writing your first NinjaTrader 8 indicators and want to set them up right from the start. If you've already written a few, the multi-timeframe and strategy lessons and the small tricks along the way will save you hours of searching through forums.
Why it still matters with AI. AI like Claude can write an indicator for you now, but to check it, fix it and change it you need to understand how an indicator is put together in NinjaTrader: defaults, parameters and plots, extra timeframes, and how a strategy should initialize it and read its values. That's exactly what this course teaches. Everything in the course is coded on screen, step by step. My advice is the same as always: type it yourself as you watch rather than copy it, then use AI like Claude to explain, check or extend what you built. That's how it sticks. Enjoy the course!
